GLOBAL MX-5 CUP set to start in 2016
At the US’s largest aftermarket automotive trade show, the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show held in Las Vegas, Nevada, on the 4th of November, Mazda USA announced that it would be starting the “Global MX-5 Cup” for the new Mazda MX-5 (“Mazda Roadster” in Japan). The “Global MX-5 Cup” will be a one-make series to be held in North America, Europe and Asia with a set of unified regulations.
This new series will start from 2016 and unified spec MX-5s will compete all over the West and the Orient. The venues and schedule will be announced as they are finalized. Furthermore, after the 2016 series has been completed, a “global shootout” will be held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Northern California) to decide who is the ultimate winner. The driver that comes out on top of this final race will be invited to take a one day test drive of the Mazda LMP2 SKYACTIV-D Racing (equipped with a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine), which is competing at the TUDOR United Sportscar Championship (TUSC)
Mazda is yet to announce detailed specifications for the new Mazda MX-5 road car but the new Global MX-5 Cup car will be mounted with a 2 liter SKYACTIV-G engine. As for the final specifications for this new Global MX-5 Cup machine, they will be announced after development has been carried out to determine the optimal tires, suspension, protective gear, etc. and order preparations made for these 2016 specs.
