#07 Mazda prototype takes 6th at the TUSC Canadian round
Over July 12th (Fri) and 13th (Sat) the TUDOR United Sports Car Championship race was held at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontaria Canada and SpeedSource’s #07 Mazda LMP2 SKYACTIV-D Racing (Joel Miller / Tristan Nunez) achieved a class 6th finish.
This racetrack, formerly known as Mosport Park, is located on the north bank of Lake Ontario and runs for 2.459 miles (approx. 3.93km). It is not only a very high-speed track, it also has quite technical sections and what many call a “dauntingly” long back straight. Skill alone is not enough to conquer this track; unwavering concentration and mental fortitude are a must. This Canadian round consisted of a 2 hour 45 minute semi-endurance race in which the #07 Mazda Prototype completed a clean run without a hint of technical issues or contact with other cars. Still in development, the Mazda SKYACTIV-D racing engine went into this event with the same aggressive settings that it used at the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen. Under these conditions the machine was able to tick off laps in the final race at an impressive pace and, without experiencing any of the feared abnormal increases in water temperature, narrowed the time difference between the lead group. On the other hand, the #70 Mazda LMP2 of Sylvain Tremblay/Tom Long lost its water pump belt early on in lap 13 and was forced to retire. They also had to drop out of the running at Watkins Glen due to mechanical issues, which makes this the second time in a row their luck hasn’t held out.
Mazda USA Motorsports director, John Doonan went on to say “Each and every time we run these Mazda Prototypes, we see improvements in how we match up to our competition, but even more important, we learn more about our SKYACTIV Technology. All of the learning and studying of this technology by Mazda engineers across the globe allow us to make road cars with high quality and strong reliability. We are so proud of the SpeedSource race team and all of the efforts by their staff….and the huge support of our partners at Castrol, BOSCH, Multimatic, ModSpace, MOTEGI wheels, and so many others. We are proving every weekend that we are we getting better and that we can run at the front. The development continues.”
