At the six-hour mark RX-8s lie 3rd, 8th, and 9th
Each of the drivers drove carefully through the opening laps because of the risky wet conditions. The top three RX-8s circulated in the middle group in the early hours of the race. However, the young generation team in the #30 car suffered an engine failure and had to return to the garage, knowing they had no chance of coming back to the track. An hour and a half after the start, the rain let up and the track started to dry out. However, parts of the track surface and the run-off areas remained wet, leaving only the racing line dry. This resulted in many cars crashing and spinning out in the tricky conditions.
Four hours in and the #69 and #70 Speedsource entries ran in tandem, in 6th and 7th places. A while later the #69 machine went into the tyre barriers, resulting in minor damage to the car. By the six-hour mark the #70 car had moved up to 3rd place, while the #69 entry had come back to 9th. The #40 Dempsey machine was running at the time in 8th.
