Daybreak and the Chilly Night Gone, RX-8 Counterattack Begins Race Report - At the 16-Hour mark
Daytona Speedway is located close to the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, one of the area's well-known facts is the drastic temperature change between day and night at this time of year. During the day, temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius are common, while nighttime and the early morning sees the mercury drop to around 10 degrees.
With 16 hours complete, the #70 SpeedSource RX-8, which had run steadily while taking care of its tyres and the car, had advanced to 7th, on the same lap as the competitors occupying 5th and 6th places. A few of the entrants were starting to show signs of fatigue as day broke, evidenced by more and more cars going off track at each of the infield corners. As the cars head onto the infield section from the first corner, the bright morning light shines directly into their eyes.
There are now eight hours remaining in the race. The #70 RX-8 has already run more than 480 laps. Temperatures are now set to rise, making things more difficult for both car and driver. In addition, sand and other debris thrown onto the track are making conditions slippery. The three-rotor whine of the #70 RX-8 sounds strong as one third of the event remains. We are anticipating a counterattack from the racing 3-rotor RX-8 GT.
