Less Than 4 Hours Left. Race Heads Into Its Final Stage Race Report - At the 20-Hour mark
More than 20 hours has passed since the start of the Rolex 24 At Daytona. This year, fewer teams than usual have retired due to crashes or other trouble, making the race that much more competitive. In the GT class, there haven't been many changes among the higher positions in the last three hours. There have been dramatic temperature changes: warm for the opening stint, colder throughout the night, and warm again in the morning - though this doesn't seem to have caused any major mechanical trouble for the entrants.
Chasing the car in 7th, the #70 SpeedSource RX-8 GT was running in 8th position at 11:30am, having had almost no trouble or accidents. Unfortunately for Dempsey Racing, their #41 Fishing Capital RX-8 had an accident during the opening stint. Patrick Dempsey's #40 Visit Florida RX-8 however, was circulating in 13th position with just four hours remaining. The #42 Team Sahlen was running 14th.
Throngs of fans in the circuit's campsite gaze at the cars racing past as others venture back from a nighttime rest in the hotel. Despite 20 hours having already elapsed, the battle in the DP (Daytona Prototype) class raged on, with the top two competitors, the #02 Chip Ganassi Racing and #60 Michael Shank Racing entries battling within a few meters of each other - and often literally side by side, mesmerizing the crowd.
