After 8 hours, one-third of the race distance, two RX-8s battle for fourth place.
At 20:00, after five hours of racing, the #69 FXDD RX-8 failed to avoid a car that had spun on the infield and hit its front end. In addition to the bodywork, the suspension was also damaged forcing the car into the garage for repairs. The work was finally completed at 22:30, and the #69 RX-8 returned to the race. The track was very slippery due to the sudden drop in track surface temperature, and the debris scattered as a result of collisions. This led to repeated caution laps, led by the Safety Car.
Meanwhile the yellow and orange "Visit Florida" liveried #40 RX-8 was battling on in fourth place. The #70 RX-8 that had lost time due to a burst tyre in the opening laps was steadily moving up the ranking. After 8 hours the two cars were fighting for fourth place, separated by only 2 to 4 seconds.
As darkness fell, spectators who had earlier been washing down hot-dogs with beer made their way back to their RVs and neighbourhood hotels, and the crowd inside the speedway grew thinner. The Daytona night had only just begun.
