Super GT Round 5 at Sportsland SUGO
Amemiya RX-7 Finishes 7th After Losing Ground Due to Accident
July 25th (Sun), Round 5 of SUPER GT, the "SUGO GT 300KM Race" was held at Sportsland SUGO in Miyagi prefecture. Despite an 80kg handicap weight, the RE Amemiya Racing RX-7 (Nobuteru Taniguchi, Ryo Orime), made it into the Super Lap qualifying session and took 5th place. In the race they held on to 4th place through the later stages, but dropped back due to an accident, and ultimately finished 7th.
A lot of families were present for the first weekend of summer at Sportsland SUGO, and on the day of the race, some 27,000 fans, mainly from northeastern Japan, came to watch the first domestic SUPER GT event in 3 months. Starting driver Taniguchi was able to move up one spot to 4th on the opening lap, and though he challenged the 3rd-placed car, the heavy weight held him back and he was unable to advance further. Second driver Orime came out of the pit after having just the left two tyres changed, and was able to get back on track in the same position, preserving 4th place and continuing the team's push. However, late in the race at the final corner he was pushed off track by a GT500 machine. He didn't spin out and was able to hold on and get back on track, but with a large amount of grass covering his radiator he was in danger of overheating. In addition the engine began to run unevenly, and in the final 3 laps he was passed by 3 other cars to finish 7th. The team however gained four points, and although now equal with the #3 machine, held on to their position in the rankings.
After the race, team representative Isami Amemiya stated, "From the start of the official practice session things went well, so I thought that we would get good results in both qualifying and the race.
In the race we ended up falling back to 7th, but even with the accident Orime did a great job of controlling the car and not wrecking it, so we didn't have to retire and were able to secure some precious points. This is the final season for the RX-7, so in the second half races we're going to really go all out. Thank you for your support."
