Super GT Round 3 at Fuji Speedway
RE AMEMIYA RX-7 fails to take any points in Fuji 400-km race
Round 3 of Super GT, the FUJI GT 400KM RACE, took place at Fuji Speedway on May 2, 2010. The RE AMEMIYA RX-7 started from 15th on the grid but was judged to have jumped the start and thus received a drive-through penalty. The car recovered to seventh place for a while, finally finishing a regrettable 11th in class.
Occurring during the "Golden Week" (Spring Break) holidays, over 53,000 spectators came to see one of the most important events in the first half of the season. The race was anticipated to be a difficult one for the team with over 40kgs' success ballast weighing down the car. In addition, the recently imposed Performance Adjustment means the RX-7 is now running with air restrictors that are 1mm smaller than previously. For this race, RE AMEMIYA were looking for as many championship points as possible after retiring from the previous round.
Starting driver Orime dropped to last place for a while, but pushed himself as he tried to recover the position. Although two driver changes were required in this race, the team planned to employ a no-tyre-change strategy in the pit stops for the long 400-kilometre event, drivers Orime and Taniguchi improving the car's position by themselves. However, when the RX-7 was running in 7th place in the final stages, its badly worn tyres couldn't provide sufficient grip and the car was unable to maintain pace, losing positions. Regrettably, the machine finished outside the points.
After the race, Mr. Amemiya commented, "It was the fault of our tyre management strategy. Of course the weight handicap and Performance Adjustment are too strict to allow us to win, but we will find the best set up for the car at the test day at Suzuka Circuit. We'll be aiming for victory in the next round - at our favorite track, Sepang International Circuit."
