RS★R DEMIO FINISHES SECOND IN ST5 CLASS AT FIRST-EVER S-TAI RACE HELD IN SOUTH KOREA Super Taukyu Round 2 - Inje Speedium
Round two of the Super Taikyu Series was held in South Korea's Inje Speedium on May 26, and the #99 RS★R DIXCEL NUTEC Demio, competing in the ST5 class and driven by the pair of Ryuichi Hirai and Hirofumi Nomura, took the second step on the podium in both races. Inje Speedium had just opened to become the second full-scale international circuit in South Korea. In addition to the local Korean race fans, many S-Tai fans from Japan were also on hand to make it a lively event.
The race was not a typical endurance race, but was formatted to comprise two 45-minute sprint race contests, with 20 cars from Japan and 11 local Korean machines for a total of 31 racers in all. A driver Ryuichi Hirai started the first race. From the very opening he pushed hard from behind, chasing the then-leading Fit. After battling for several laps, the Demio took the top spot. Even though it was caught up to on the straights, it was able to build up a gap in the corners. However, the engine, having overheated in qualifying on the previous day, required cautious driving which turned it into a difficult race. Even so, the Demio somehow succeeded in getting away from the second-place Fit by more than 3 seconds. The top position was maintained into the latter half of the race, but right at the moment the Demio yielded to a car from a different class, it hit a gap in the track and went off course doing a half-spin. The Demio relinquished the top spot and did not have time for a push to retake the lead and finished second. It was a disappointing first race. However, the Demio was able to demonstrate its speed at its first-ever event in South Korea.
The second race had B driver Nomura behind the wheel, and it quickly turned into a battle for second place with the #33 Vitz while pursuing the #19 Fit. Nomura's Demio passed the Vitz on the 18th lap, established its position in second spot and finished in that position. The season-opening race having been canceled due to snow, the RS★R Demio is currently ranked second. The top of the standings is within reach.
