Super Taikyu Series 2010 Round 7
RX-7 Takes Double Win in Season's Final Round, Motegi Oval Battle
The final event in the Super Taikyu series, the "Oval Battle" was held on Saturday, November 27 on the oval course at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit. Two races of 50 laps each were held, with the number 15 car, the Okabe Jidosha Dixcel Iwasaki RX-7, dominating the event on its way to victory in both races with the driving team of Masaaki Nagashima, Yuuki Iwasaki and Kenichi Sugibayashi.
This year is the third time the Oval Battle has been featured, after being added to the series calendar in 2008. The addition of a chicane just before the turn in the oval course forced the drivers to brake heavily from full speed, making for exciting racing. The RX-7 was pushed hard by the other competitors this season. "We were on the second step of the podium in last year's Oval Battle, so we have to at least equal that result" said driver and team representative Nagashima enthusiastically. In the first race the number 15 Okabe Jidosha Dixcel Iwasaki RX-7 qualified in fourth place, and after some fierce racing action made a perfect pit stop to rejoin in first place, winning the race spectacularly with a one-lap advantage over the second-placed competitor. The number 15 RX-7 started the second race in pole position, and held off the competition throughout for a lights-to-flag victory.
Immediately after the start of the first race at the first chicane, the number 7 Okabe Jidosha JDS Makers RX-7 was unable to avoid two cars that had entered the chicane together and crashed. The car suffered severe damage and was unable to enter the second race.
After the race, Nagashima said, "this season has been very frustrating, but it feels good to have been able to finish up with this comprehensive win. Iwasaki and Sugibayashi really produced their best this time, the pit stop went very well, and for the RX-7, the fact that we didn't need to refuel saved us a lot of time and contributed to the win. The RX-7 can still be improved further, and even though next year has not yet been decided, I would be very happy to compete again in the car. We are very grateful to the rotary engine fans all across the country for their support."
