2010 Super Taikyu Series, Round 2 SUGO Super Taikyu 400-kilometre race at SPORTSLAND SUGO, Miyagi prefecture
OKABE JIDOUSHA RX-7 Scores Podium
Round 2 of the 2010 Super Taikyu Series, the SUGO Super Taikyu 400-kilometre race took place at SPORTSLAND SUGO on May 9, 2010. The #7 OKABE JIDOUSHA RX-7 scored third place in the ST-3 class, while the #15 OKABE JIDOUSHA RX-7 finished in seventh place due to brake system trouble.
Because it is a technical circuit containing many complex turns and high-speed corners between its two up-and-downhill straights, SUGO is a favorable racetrack for the RX-7. For this round, the two OKABE JIDOSHA RX-7s ran with new paint schemes and were seen to be extremely eager to win this event at SUGO.
Under delightful skies with a refreshing early May breeze, the race started only three hours after qualifying as this round was run to a one-day meet format.
The #7 RX-7 started last in class, ninth on the grid, due to its turbine blowing during qualifying. The car steadily improved its position while BMW and NSX entries led the opening stages of the race. However, these two cars ran off track, bringing out the Safety Car. In the last three laps, the #7 passed the #51 Nissan Z and finished in third place. On the other hand, the #15 RX-7 started from forth on the grid. However the car ran off track on the back stretch due to brake system trouble. A lot of time was then spent recovering the car and returning it to the track. It eventually finished in seventh place, 17 laps behind the winner.
After the race, team owner and driver M. Nagashima said, "I thought SUGO was favorable for the RX-7, but other cars were also fast, so it was a tough race. Fortunately the #7 scored a podium result, allowing us to save face."
