Mazda2s demonstrate their presence in final round of Thai Super Series at Bangsaen

The final round of the Thai Super Series was held over the December 21-22 weekend on a street course marked out in Bangsaen in the country's Chonburi province, where the official Mazda Sales Thailand (MST) team were entered with a pair of Mazda2 (Demio) among the 19 cars in the series' Super Production race.

The streets of Bangsaen, a beach resort town located approximately 150 kilometres from the Thai capital, Bangkok, were blocked off for the Bangsaen Speed Festival, which quickly became crowded as spectators gathered for what has been dubbed the "Greatest race event in Thailand". The 3.7-kilometre track, which follows the coastline, is connected by a long main straight. For this race, the Innovation Mazda Team employed the skills of two well-known drivers for their cars, with popular actor Pete Thongchua piloting the #17 Mazda2, while Michael Freeman was at the controls of the identical #55 machine. In qualifying, Freeman earned fifth on the grid for the #55 car, while Thongchua, halted on track during the session with an electrical problem, was forced to start from the back of the 18-car field in the Day 1 race.

Round 7 of the series was held on Day 1, Saturday, where trouble with the fuel pump on the warm-up lap meant the #55 was unable to start the race, and was retired. Meanwhile, having started at the bottom of the pile, Thongchua quickly made up places and finished a creditable seventh. In the following day's race (Sunday, Round 8), Thongchua started the #17 car seventh, passed several rivals in the early stages, and crossed the finish line in fourth. However, the race became a tough one as the high-speed track with its long main straight was slightly unsuited to the Mazda2, known more for its handling than its straight-line speed, getting pushed by a succession of cars in the later stages. Freeman, starting from 18th on the grid, reached the flag in ninth place. In addition, Pete Thongchua, who also races a Mazda BT50 in the Super Truck races, clinched the title with the points earned on Day 1 and Day 2, his second championship title in a row.

The Mazda2 made its series' debut this season, and has gone beyond expectations with its success, which already includes a championship title. We look with anticipation towards next season where a further leap forward is sure to occur.
