Mazda 787B makes appearance in Odaiba, Tokyo
PR event supports Tokyo Motor Show
As a PR event at the currently ongoing Tokyo Motor Show, a parade of legendary Japanese race cars and currently active racing machines was held on the public streets in Odaiba, Tokyo this past November 16 (Sat.), where the rotary sound of the Mazda 787B, overall winner of the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours, echoed as it ran the autumn city streets.
At this event, which started with an appeal by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, every domestic automaker was present. Legendary machines such as the Group A spec. Skyline GT-R, Celica WRC and Mazda 787B, as well as flashy currently active of the machines like the latest Lexus LFA, Impreza WRX 24 Hours Nurburgring version, Super Formula cars, the high-spec Mitsubishi i-MIEV, Subaru's BRZ GT300, and the NISSAN GT-R GT500 lined up together and headed from the event site out onto public roads and drove through the city. Many fans lined the streets hoping to get a look at the prominent Japanese racing cars that followed under the leadership of the head of Japan's transportation administration, National Public Safety Commission Chairman Keiji Furuya.
This is of course the first time that specialized racing machines have been driven on public roads like this. In the groundbreaking event, it was former Mazda factory driver Yojiro Terada that took the wheel of the Mazda 787B, who said, “The famous 24 Hours of Le Mans was originally a race on public roads. It would be great if we ever had races on public roads here in Japan one day.”
The Tokyo Motor Show will be open at Tokyo's famed Tokyo Big Sight until December 1 (Sun.). The Mazda booth is located in the east wing, where the new Axela, Atenza, CX-5 and other production models that use the SKYACTIV technology are on display, and they are also conducting their "Shakin' Racer" smartphone game, which was popular at Tsukuba Circuit and the Mazda booth at Motorsports Japan.
