Roadster Karuizawa Meeting 2013 held
May 26th (Sunday): The Karuizawa Meeting 2013 took place in the parking area of the Karuizawa Prince ski ground in Nagano prefecture, with Mazda roadster owners coming from all over the country to attend the annual event.
Participants were numerous, with a total of 1,117 cars in total. The largest grouping came from the NA variant of the iconic car, of which some 563 entries were on hand. This was followed by NB examples, numbering 297. There were 257 NC examples (including 8 in-house coupes and 115 retractable hardtop variants). With the record turnout of 1,699 participants, it was the world's largest annual event for a single model type anywhere. Occurring immediately after the announcement that the rainy season had officially started, there was some concern about the weather - though these fears were soon put to rest as glorious climes greeted the attendees and the unique spectacle of so many open-top cars gathered in one place.
Preparation began well in advance of the event, and featured volunteers, including not only those who love roadsters, but also the executive committee members, all coming together to contribute so that participants could enjoy themselves on the day. In one corner of the venue, small children could be seen running hard in their pedal car versions of the roadster, aiming diligently for the flag. In addition to looking cute, they were also brave. The talk show featured Mazda's chief development examiner for the current edition roadster Mr. Nobuhiro Yamamoto, along with his predecessor Mr. Takao Kijima. The many participants listened eagerly to the guests as they spoke at the annual gathering.
There were also original parts on sale, with specialist shop owners providing all manner of support and advice to those browsing the stalls and booths set up especially for the event. This year's meet was the 21st gathering of the Karuizawa Meeting, with the participants vowing to “return to this place again next year” amidst smiles from the participants and guests.
