Mazda2 Scores Hat Trick in COTA Pirelli World Challenge B-Spec races.
Austin, Texas venue plays host to trio of nail-biters as new winner emerges to lead closely-fought category.
Race action was non-stop when the Pirelli World Challenge visited Texas' latest big attraction, Cricuit Of The Americas. In the first three rounds of the Touring Car B-Spec season, Ernie Francis Jr. became the youngest winner in Pirelli World Challenge history at 15 years, three months and 25 days, one day after setting the same record for a series' pole. Francis Jr. was joined on the podium by his father Ernie Francis, of Davie, Fla., - who had moved from seventh on the grid to third in his No. 2 Hydraulic Jeans-liveried MAZDA2. The elder Francis earned the Sunoco Hard Charger award for advancing five positions overall in the race.
In round two, the racing was just as close as it had been in round one. Francis Jr. added to his results resume, doubling up on his Saturday victory with another win. “It feels great so far,” Francis Jr. said. “I've only won some amateur races up until now. These first pro wins are really exciting.”
“(Rival Charlie) James was in front for most of the second race. I couldn't make the pass on the inside of the final corner, so I had to duck on the outside of him in the last turn and go through the grass. It was a drag race to the finish and I got him by about a foot.”
The third round of the weekend, held on the Sunday, was another demonstration of dominance by the high school student. Starting from the pole, Francis Jr. had the measure of the field and was unthreatened in his MAZDA2 on the way to his final win in a clean sweep of victories in Texas.
