3-rotor-engined Mazda3 Supercar Finishes 2nd at Zolder
Supercar Challenge Series
April 20-21, FIA GT Series race week, Zolder, Belgium The 20B 3-rotor engine-equipped Mazda3 belonging to Van Herck Racing, based in the outskirts of Antwerp, Belgium, placed 2nd in class at the opening round of the Supercar Challenge Series.
This season's car is derived from a 2012MY base vehicle, equipped with a SADEV gearbox, and features added improvements to the aerodynamics, resulting in enhanced reliability and competitiveness. The FR layout machine's 3-rotor engine produces over 450 horsepower, and is especially effective on high-speed tracks. In official qualifying for the opening round, held at the team's home track of Zolder, huge strides were made over the times set in 2012, and the car snatched 2nd place on the grid. Expectations thus grew ahead of the race. In the 1st official race, they placed 2nd in the GTB class. It could be said htat their achievement was the second best performance after the Porsche 997 GT3. In the 2nd race, they lapped at a competitive pace in the early stages. However, 20 minutes after the start of the race, trouble arose with the hydraulic system. Unfortunately, they finished in a close 4th. Despite the setback, they still managed to take 2nd overall in the GTB class.
Driver and team owner Werner Van Herck commented, “The car ran extremely well in qualifying but it appears that driving with a full tank of fuel puts a lot of burden on the tires. Due to this, a few problems occurred. However, I think we should be satisfied with the result of coming 2nd in the GTB class in this, the opening round”.
The 2nd round of the series is scheduled for May 19th at the Slovakia Ring.
