Macau GP Practice Held In Rain For First Time in 30 Years
The 58th Macau Grand Prix week started on November 17. Part of the track is made up of closed public roads.
The Knight Sports Vang Iek Team is entered in the Road Sports Challenge race, one of the main events in the Macau GP week. They were preparing their RX-8 and RX-7 entries until midnight on the day before the morning practice session. However, rain started to fall just before the session got underway. Therefore, the RX-8 and the RX-7 had their dry tyres replaced with rain tyres before being allowed out on track.
Macau resident Mr. Kevin Tse smiled and said, "This is the first time in 30 years that I've seen rain falling at the Macau Grand Prix. I've never driven in wet conditions here." Although the weather forecast had predicted rain, all teams went out initially on dry tyresdue to the perfectly dry conditions at the time. Just 15 minutes before the practice session started however, an official announced, "wet conditions", meaning all teams had to quickly return to the pits for a change of rubber.
Almost all competitors fielded 4WD sports cars, and the RX-8 and RX-7 entries were FR layout Rotary turbos. Under rainy conditions, FR cars are less stable than 4WD cars so scoring a top time would prove to be difficult. In addition, there was always the risk of getting involved in accidents with the other cars. Therefore, the team decided to check the cars' basic performance and sent them out on track. They ran just 5-7 laps in the 30-minute practice session.
Managing Director Mr. Hidefumi Nakamura said, "We finished the practice session early because we had found how to set up our cars' suspension systems. We can manage if it rains in tomorrow's qualifying session. We've changed our qualifying strategy of fighting for pole to trying for a position within the top ten if it does rain. With a top-ten starting position, I believe we can still achieve a good result in the race."
Mr. Tatsuya Tanigawa explained, "The sea side straight section was heavy wet and the cars splashed up a lot of water there, but the mountain sections were better and I was able to see the track conditions easily. I could check the brake system and was able to grasp the car's condition. I believe the race will be run in dry conditions, although tomorrow's qualifying session will be run in the rain."
