Charge liveried AZ-1 competes
in Sepang K4GP 24-hour endurance race.

"Ticket Windows," the Autozam AZ-1 gullwing kei sports car owners club participated and claimed an overall class victory in the Sepang K4GP 24-hour endurance race at Malaysia's Sepang F1 circuit, held from the 12th to 13th of February.

The K4GP is raced against other kei cars at FIA-recognised international circuits. The race features a variety of unique cars, from kei road cars to former race replicas, and races are conducted with only the most basic rules, such as safety regulations. The event also includes limited fuel "eco" rule.

Hiroshima prefecture-based Ticket Windows prepared two AZ-1 cars for the race. One was designated car number 55, the same number as the Mazda 787B that claimed overall victory in the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours, and was also painted in the same Charge livery as that car. The number 55 car was entered in the GP3 350-litre fuel class, while the other car, number 57, was entered in the GP3 290-litre fuel class. The race started at noon local time, and the two cars were lapping well with fuel consumption better than expected. However, as the race entered its second half, one of the cars met with some trouble on the circuit. At around 01:30 am, car number 57 was hit from behind by another car. Fortunately the damage was slight and had little effect on the car's racing ability. Following that there were some worries over a loss of grip, but after swapping the front tyers the car returned to its original pace. At around 9am, with three hours of the race to go, car number 55, which had been lapping without incident, had a problem with its braking system. The crew went all-out to fix the problem with the car - which was able to return to the circuit just before the finish of the race, and both cars were able to reach the chequered flag at noon. Car number 55 finished in 31st place overall while car 57 was 19th overall and won the GP3 290-litre fuel class.

One member of the team said: "There are many things we can learn from this experience. If we get the chance we would like to use the data from this race, to aim for a higher finishing position in the future."
