Knight Sports RX-8 Macau Grand Prix Challenge Ends After Only 5 Seconds
The 57th running of the Macau Grand Prix was held from November 18th to 21st on a street circuit located in the centre of the city. The Road Sports Challenge race, in which the Knight Sports RX-8 competed, was held on the final day of the meet, but the car was involved in an accident just after the beginning of the race, and as a result its event was over after just 5 seconds.
The Macau circuit is narrow, and without any escape zones, races there are known as "car-breakers". In other categories too, there were many accidents and crashes. As a result, the Road Sports Challenge race that was originally scheduled for November 20th was postponed until the morning of the 21st.
The weather on the morning of November 21st was fine with light cloud overhead and the temperature measured at around 24 degrees Celsius. The cars entered in the Road Sports Challenge race went out on track at a little after 8:30 before lining up on the starting grid. After a single formation lap, the cars set off from a standing start. However, almost immediately the machine that came from the outside behind the RX-8, which had qualified 2nd, violently hit the RX-8's right front wheel. On top of that, the machine that came from the left outside hit the RX-8's left wheel, and the RX-8 was left unable to move, stopping where it was on track. The machines squeezed either side were also unable to move, so the race was suspended.
Driver Tatsuya Tanigawa said, "I was trapped by cars on either side, and both front wheels were broken so I was unable to do anything. It is a real shame that the race ended after just a few seconds." Also team representative Hidefumi Nakamura said, "The RWD RX-8 is at a disadvantage in the start dash compared to the AWDs. We thought that after reaching 3rd gear speed, the advantage would be ours, although at the start we would be overtaken, but we are at our wits' end when squashed from both sides and having our path blocked. It is a real disappointment, but we have to accept that this is also a part of racing. We hope to continue to participate at Macau in the future if there is a category suitable to us."
