Mazda 787B demo run held at Hiroshima shopping mall
In the afterglow of California's SEVENSTOCK 13, the Mazda 787B (domestic spec) roared again on Sunday, September 19, emitting its powerful four-rotor sound in Mazda's home base, Hiroshima.
The demonstration run was held in the parking lot of an outlet mall in Nishi-ku, Hiroshima City, as part of "Motor Festival Hiroshima 2010" hosted by the Hiroshima City Transportation Museum, which had hosted a race event at the same venue last July. Three Mazdas: a Cosmo Sports Marathon de la Route model, a Mazda RX-500 (a concept car produced in 1970), and a Mazda 787B made demo runs for the second year in a row. It was a clear, sunny day in Hiroshima City, and many fans began arriving at the venue overlooking Hiroshima Bay from early in the morning, including a number of cars with license plates from other prefectures. The hosts reported 14,000 visitors-some 3,000 more than at the previous year's event. ?The Mazda 787B that made the demo run this time was domestic-race model (JSPC) chassis No. 003. This machine took third place in the JSPC Inter Challenge Fuji 1000 km race in October 1991. Mazda's headquarters began a dynamic restoration of the car in 2007, and it made a comeback in 2008 in the same livery as when it was racing. The car made its first demo run following restoration at Motorsport Japan 2008 in Odaiba, Tokyo, and this run in Hiroshima was its third.
Two demo runs were held-one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with the loud blipping sound of the R26B engine echoing across the entire venue as the car entered the course. The special course was about 100m long and 15m wide, and although the space was far too narrow for the 787B, local driver Yasutaka Hinoi succeeded in making accelerator turns at the both ends of the course, receiving cheers and applause from many of the fans.
