Mazda sends flowers to the 90th anniversary of Le Mans
In commemoration of this year's 90th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, Mazda presented flowers to the tournament in respect of two topics.
Mazda received an invitation to the 90th anniversary event after the Mazda 787B was chosen as the favorite Le Mans car of the 1990s, based upon Internet voting and votes cast by experts for the best Le Mans car. The Mazda 787B, which is normally on display at the Mazda Museum in Hiroshima, was packed again and flown by air to France. Arriving on Monday, June 17, the car was placed in the “Legendary Le Mans Cars” pavilion within the Circuit de la Sarthe, and put on public display starting on the 19th. Other vehicles chosen in the same way as the Mazda 787B included: a Bentley Speed 6 from the 1920s, an Alfa Romeo 8C from the 1930s, a Ferrari 166MM from the 1940s, a Jaguar D Type from the 1950s, a Ford GT40 MKII from the 1960s, a Porsche 917K from the 1970s, a Porsche 962C from the 1980s, a Peugeot 905 from the 1990s (two vehicles were chosen for this generation), an Audi R10 TDI from the 2000s, and an Audi R18 e-tron Quattro from the 2010s, for a total of ten vehicles. Shortly after 12:30 on the 22nd, before the start of this year's race, these legendary machines formed a line and conducted a parade run around the Circuit de la Sarthe. The man behind the wheel of the Mazda 787B was Yojiro Terada, a former factory driver for Mazda, and reflecting on the parade run, he stated, “It was a very emotional experience to be able to run with all of the other machines, with all of the marshals at every post waving their hands. I am honored and thankful for this opportunity.”
The other topic was Mazda's backing of a Le Mans homestay program planned by an NPO which targeted junior and senior high school students living in areas devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Ten students left Japan on June 16, and after attending classes for French language and culture within the city of Le Mans, they went on a “field trip” to the circuit the following weekend. Dressed in matching orange jackets and caps, the students read a statement to Mazda Executive Officer Masahiro Moro, who had arrived to greet them: “Thank you for giving us such as wonderful experience. We will use these experiences to reach for our dreams.” The program was also sponsored by the ACO, Michelin Tires, and Toyota's TMG Team, and attracted attention from the local media as well.
