Huis Ten Bosch echoes with rotary sound
D1GP Round 5 - Exhibition Match

Round 5 of D1GP was held on September 13 and 14 at a special course laid out in Huis Ten Bosch in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, and four Mazda machines competed, including a four-rotor RX-7 (FD3S) driven by Mad Mike of New Zealand, who made a spot appearance.

However, Mad Mike's #53 Red Bull with Magic entry was eliminated in qualifying, and although he said that he likes Japan and had a lot of fun, it seemed that he wanted to have driven more. The crowd was thrilled by the four-rotor sound produced by Mad Mike's RX-7. The following day was the main draw of the event, and each of the three Mazda machines that entered the solo final advanced to the twin-run tournament. Yukio Matsui in his #77 EXEDY R Magic D1 Racing entry made it into the best 16, but was eliminated by Emmanuel Amandio, and later commented, “I was okay up until the entry, but he was faster on the brakes and in turning.”

Takahiro Imamura, driving the #21 MADFACE KANTO with SAMURAI Project RX-7 (FC3S), and Masao Suenaga in the #7 RE Amemiya SUNOCO with Yokohama RX-8 both made it into the best eight, with Suenaga winning. However, Imamura said, “I had some trouble, but I didn't give up and made it this far,” seeming satisfied. Although Suenaga was eliminated by Sakuma in the following semi-final round, he said, “We both ran all-out, so losing like that is nothing to regret.” Suenaga ended up coming third.

There was also an exhibition match held on the second day, but Matsui, Imamura, and Suenaga were all eliminated in the Block Tournament, failing to win and advance to the second half.
