Mazda President Yamanouchi Speaks in Sendai about 20th Anniversary of Le Mans Win
July 24th: the final round of the "Mazda All Star Game," one of a series of events in Japanese professional baseball, took place at Kleenex Stadium Miyagi, located in Sendai city. At the event, Mazda president Mr. Takashi Yamanouchi spoke about the Mazda 787B and the 20th anniversary of its historical victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours.
Mr. Yamanouchi, visiting Sendai to attend the Mazda All-Star Game, answered questions posed by a local TV presenter and newspaper, stating, "This year marks the 20th anniversary of Mazda's victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours. This February we received an offer from the Le Mans organizers to run the car on the full track at Le Mans. From that point we began preparing the 787B and were able to successfully conduct exhibition runs before the start of this year's race, held in June. At the race, a giant French flag with the signatures of all 168 drivers competing in this year's event was presented to JAF to be auctioned off for charity. There was also a silent tribute for the souls of the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. In addition, we at Mazda were invited to participate in the parade through the city of Le Mans as a mark of respect for Japan. We received a lot of kindness from the people there. I thought we should extend that message of warmth from the French nation directly to the people in Sendai, one of the most badly stricken areas. It is for that reason I decided we should exhibit the Mazda 787B here now."
On the day of the game the weather in Sendai was sweltering at over 30 degrees Celsius, but this did nothing to deter president Yamanouchi from volunteering to hand out stickers and presents to attending children, as well as signing autographs for fans. Some of those in attendance expressed their gratitude to president Yamanouchi saying, "I appreciate you coming from so far away," "It reminds me of the day my heart was full of joy," and "It was well worth coming all the way from Yamagata to see the 787B."
