One Mazda LMP2 Car Drops Out Just Before Dawn
16 Hours

As 6am arrived at Daytona, racers entered the 16th hour of the Rolex 24. Unfortunately the #70 Mazda LMP2 SKYACTIV-D Racing entry wasn't among their ranks, having retired in the pre-dawn hours.

It was an eventful night, with many incidents and multiple yellow caution flags on track, but through it all the Mazda prototypes raced. Just after 3am, the #07 car re-entered the garage to have an intercooler replaced. The #70 car was also experiencing some difficulty, its driver reporting a "vibration that is slowly becoming stronger and stronger." Despite the vibration, the #70 continued on. However, just after 5:30am, things took a turn for the worse. Amidst a now severe shaking, and a noticeable drop in performance, Hinchcliffe steered the car into the garage. Engineers removed and examined the injectors. Some minutes later they could be seen shaking their heads. Due to damage caused by overheating, the unfortunate conclusion was reached that the #70 wouldn't be able to re-enter the race.

The remaining SKYACTIV-D car continues to soldier on comparatively trouble-free. At 6am it maintains 15th place in the prototype class. During the last visit to pit row, the #07 took on only fuel, with driver Joel Miller staying in the cockpit for a double stint. However there has been a report that, due to an electrical issue, the car has lost both interior lighting and dashboard illumination. Dawn will soon arrive. The sun will rise on the Daytona 24, and on a driver and car doing all they can to remain in this race.
