What is the ROLEX 24 at Daytona?
The ROLEX 24 at Daytona is an endurance event held at the beginning of the racing season at Daytona International Speedway, built in 1959 in Daytona Beach, a resort town located 60 miles northeast of Orlando, Florida, USA. The track layout specific to the Daytona 24 Hours measures 3.86 miles, combining the famous 31-degree banked 2.5-mile tri-oval with a technical infield section in what is considered an extremely high-speed course. Because the track is situated close to the beach, on windy days large amounts of sand can come onto the track surface, making it all the more demanding. Fog is also an issue, brought on by rapidly changing air temperatures coming in off the nearby ocean. Daytona International Speedway is also famous for hosting the popular NASCAR event, the "Daytona 500" every February.
The 2010 Daytona 24 Hours starts at 1500hrs local time on Saturday, January 30th.
