MAZDA RX-792P WINS BY GIANT MARGIN
Monterey Reunion 2013

At the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (California), a simulated race was held on the 18th, and the Mazda RX-792P driven by Mazda North America executive Weldon Munsey won Group 6B, composed of machines that competed in the FIA Endurance Championship and IMSA in the 1980s.

In the qualifying race held in the morning, he was momentarily passed by a Nissan GTP, but quickly retook the position, Munsey's RX-792 displaying steady pace from beginning to end. “They exploited my mistake, ” Munsey said. “Their machine is quick on the straightaway. I did get it together and take back the top spot right away, though, ” said Weldon.

The starting grid for the main race had Director of Public Relations Jeremy Barnes' RX-7 GTO in second place, five places further down was VP Robert Davis' Mazda 787, followed by the Mazda 787 sprint spec of Yojiro Terada, who said, “I fumbled the start and was being passed all the way to the first corner. ”

The main race started just after 3:00pm, with strong sunlight scorching the racetrack. ION this occasion, Terada did not fall behind at the start, quickly jumping from eighth up to fifth. After that, he fended off an Aston Martin waiting for a chance to overtake, and finished the 10-lap race in fifth place. “I couldn't end the race with a position like that, so I tried my hardest. It felt really good to overtake three other cars, ” said Terada. On top was Munsey's RX-792, which never once was threatened by those following him, and which won by a wide margin. Barnes' RX-7 GTO finished second. “We all worked together to do emergency repairs to a fuel leak in the gasbag, and it paid off as I was able to enter the race. If you just let it run, my machine is fast,” said Barnes. Davis' 787 finished the race ninth. This year's reunion, in which the top two finishers were Mazda four-rotor rotary engine models, was an event enjoyed by all of the members of the Mazda USA team. “Let's meet here again next time for a reunion, ” they said, before splitting up.
