Mazda shines at Mazda's Home Track September 8 &9, Monterey, California
The big news of this past weekend: Mazda Motorsports drivers Wayne Nonnamaker and Dane Cameron clinching the GT-class win in GRAND-AM Road Racing's Rolex Sports Car Series competition in their #43 Team Sahlen Mazda RX-8, edging out a Ferrari 458 and Porsche GT3 to do it!
The Team Sahlen expressed their feeling after the race as “What an amazing feeling…,thanks to all the dedicated crew who have stuck with the team…, and thanks to the fans out there who have been loyal and believed in the hot dog team”. After a difficult weekend, the #70 Castrol Modspace Mazdaspeed Mazda RX-8 GT scored a 9th place finish.
But before their win, a pair of Mazda MX-5s from Freedom Autosport split 1st and 2nd in Grand Am's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, thanks to Tom Long and Derek Whitis in the #25 car, and Andrew Carbonell and Rhett O'Doski in the #26 car, respectively, who out-drove a field of 32 contenders led by a mean BMW 328i.
The Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear, in which Official Team Pelfrey's #82-piloting Jack Hawksworth clinched Season Championship honors after winning the first of two races for the weekend, before Colombian racer Gabriel 'Gabby' Chaves earned his first-ever trip to the top of the podium in the second race, with his Mazda-powered #19 JDC Motorsports car.
