SpeedSource Battles for Championship Points at Watkins Glen
2012Grand-Am Rolex Series Round 8, Watkins Glen

As the 2012 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series reaches its 8th race, teams arrived at Watkins Glen hoping to stay competitive in the run for the Championship title as the series hits its half way marker. With only a week turnaround from Road America, SpeedSource was ready to race in the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen. After a strong 3rd place finish at this track last season, Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito were no strangers to the podium and hoped to carry on recent momentum.

During practice, the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 was consistently at the top of the charts. The SpeedSource crew made small aerodynamic and suspension changes before qualifying which helped place the car 4th on the starting grid for the race; despite qualifying being cut short due to a black flag.

As the sun beamed down onto the track Sunday, teams were faced with enduring hot temperatures. SpeedSource, a Florida-based team, was accustomed to this weather and was therefore able to stay focused. As the six hour race kicked off, Jonathan Bomarito drove to the top of the pack, maintaining a Top 5 position in the race's opening stint. The team knew that the main goal was to conserve the car in order to stay competitive till the end of the six hour endurance race. As the crew consistently performed flawless pit stops, Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito would swap driving duties in order to stay fresh for the long haul. Each subsequent pit stop allowed the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 to maintain its 15-second lead on the GT field.

The #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 was caught in a subsequent caution period following a race restart. Coincidentally, an error by the Safety Car on the wave-by procedure sent several GT cars around the field, thereby gaining invaluable track position. This proved to be a hurdle too large to overcome in just 45 minutes of racing and the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 was relegated to a 7th place finish.
