Coming off a strong 2nd place finish just a week earlier in Detroit, MI the SpeedSource crew was ready to race again in round 6 of the 2012 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Cars Series. This leg of the schedule brought the premier American sports car racing series to the classic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course which is nestled between Columbus and Cleveland, OH. Drivers Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito were no strangers to the EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio having driven here in years past. As always, the crew of the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 was focused and ready to carry momentum into Saturday’s race.
Teams worked diligently during Friday’s two practice sessions. The SpeedSource crew was no stranger to setup at this 2.26mi road course as they worked to prep the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 for afternoon qualifying. Sylvain Tremblay placed the nimble Mazda at 7th on the starting grid.
Saturday brought clear skies and sunshine; perfect conditions for racing. Tremblay started the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 and managed the intense on-track pressure to maintain pace with the leaders in GT. A flawless first pit stop, which has become a staple of the team, catapulted the #70 Mazda with co-driver Jonathan Bomarito into the front of the GT pack. Great driving coupled with excellent strategy moved the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 up to a4th place finish.
“At this level of motorsport, you really need to be strong in all areas,” recalled Tremblay. “From the crew and drivers to our fantastic sponsors and fans, this finish is a testament of the hard work that is necessary to compete in the Rolex Sports Car Series.”
