#42 Team Sahlen RX-8 GT Secures 2nd Place
after Wild Final 2 Laps of Road America
2011 Grand-Am Rolex Series Round7
Rolex Sports Car Series 250, Road America

The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series made its debut at Road America Raceway, Wisconsin for Round 7. The event ran as a shortened sprint format race lasting just two hours. The truncated race distance would mean strategy and teamwork would play integral roles.

Wayne Nonnamaker gave Team Sahlen its first Rolex Series GT pole. In the race, Wayne settled into a comfortable pace in the early laps, sitting in 4th place. However, a 51-minute caution period resulted after an accident five laps from the start. The #07 Chevrolet Camaro lost its brakes and ran into the back of Joe Foster's #40 Dempsey Racing Mazda RX-8 GT. Foster spun through the gravel and tagged the tire barrier. He was awake and alert, and later transported to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, where he was released after evaluation. This incident caused a prolonged yellow that put many teams to guessing what the best strategy would be once the race went back to green.

Team Sahlen chose to top off the #42 and change drivers, replacing Wayne Nonnamaker with John Edwards once past the 30-minute mandatory minimum driver time in car limit. Team Sahlen choose to pit and add only the necessary fuel to get to the end of the race. This strategy seemed to be backfiring, as many of the other GT competitors were trying to stretch their fuel all the way to the flag. On the last lap, two of the top GT cars ran out of fuel. The #42 RX-8 GT with co-driver John Edwards finished in 2nd place.

For SpeedSource and their duo of Mazda RX-8s, the #70 Castrol Edge Mazda RX-8 GT scored a 7th place finish after a hard-fought race while the #69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 GT rounded out the Top 10.
The #41 Dempsey Racing RX-8 GT struggled to a disappointing 13th place finish.
