SpeedSource on Podium at Barber Motorsports Park
2011 Grand-Am Rolex Series Round3
Porsche 250, Barber Motorsports Park
The SpeedSource team arrived at Barber Motorsports Park with extra purpose for Round 3 of the Rolex Sports Car Series. On March 11th, the people of Japan were devastated by the largest earthquake to hit the nation. Having a long-standing relationship with Japanese manufacturer Mazda, SpeedSource has pledged all of the winnings from the #70 Castrol Edge Mazda RX-8 to the American Red Cross' relief effort. Both drivers and crew knew that they were racing for a special cause and diligently worked to produce results.
Having qualified 6th for the start, Sylvain Tremblay steadily climbed forward in the GT class. The team owner/driver piloted the #70 Castrol Edge Mazda RX-8 for the race's opening 1.75 hours. In typical SpeedSource fashion, great race strategy and flawless pit stops proved to be the difference maker for Saturday's race. Co-driver Jonathan Bomarito took control of the car with an hour remaining and pushed the pace, eventually earning a 3rdplace finish for the team. Even more impressive, SpeedSource was able to donate $6000 in race winnings to the American Red Cross' Japan earthquake relief.
The momentum also expanded over to the #69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 SpeedSource team car. Defending GT-Class champions, and co-drivers, Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal are on pace to defend their title. With Saturday's 4th place result, the duo has finished in the top five in the last two races. It was this consistency that carried them to the title in 2010.
Dane Cameron and James Gu? finished sixth in the No. 41 Dempsey Racing Team Seattle/Global Diving & Salvage Mazda RX-8 GT, and Patrick Dempsey, Joe Foster and Charles Espenlaub co-drove the No. 40 Dempsey Racing VISIT FLORIDA/ModSpace/Construct Corps Mazda RX-8 GT to an eighth-place finish.
Mazda also assumed the lead in the Manufacturer Standings with Saturday's results from Barber Motorsports Park. Strength in numbers and unsurpassed reliability has led to Mazda being the only manufacturer to podium in each of the first three races this season. The team will look to carry this success to Round 4.
